((Hiroshima was a RETALIATION to them bombing Pearl Harbor. Or did everyone just forget this? ))i’m not wildly defending the japanese strike on pearl harbor, but did “everyone just forget”
- pearl harbour was a naval base and the strike was completely targeted at the military force and not at civilians
- 2,402 killed
- 1,247 wounded
- very few “civilian” casualties
- the japanese dropped non-nuclear bombs
- the response by america included putting japanese-american citizens in interment camps
bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki:
- 90,000–166,000 killed in Hiroshima
- 60,000–80,000 killed in Nagasaki
- most of the dead were civilians
- “These two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date”
“retaliation” really doesn’t quite sum it up, does it?
Actually in response to OP, the bombs were dropped to preclude an invasion of mainland Japan. Several estimates published trying to estimate US casualties in the event of an invasion ranged from the low ball 100,000+ to better than 1,000,000+. Estimates of Japanese casualties were many times that as all experience of Japanese tactics and previous battle experience on other islands like Okinawa led us to believe that even a victorious invasion would lead to the near genocide of the Japanese people. On Okinawa women holding their infants in their arms threw themselves off cliffs to their deaths to avoid capture. Thousands of Japanese troops, who had no hope of victory, simply fought to inflict the maximum number of casualties on US forces. It wasn’t retaliation, it was seen at the time as a way to minimize casualties believe it or not.
